Amesbury Evening W.I. enjoyed an evening of Visual Arts for their November meeting and were encouraged to join the Amesbury group for more insight and knowledge of creative arts.
Mrs. A. Rasey presided and reports were given on a beautiful day out at Exbury gardens. Forthcoming produce Christmas meetings were arranged and for the more energetic the Skittles team have already found a winning streak and have further matches to play. The trip to Waitrose was a great success and disappointment was expressed that such demonstrations are to be discontinued. An evening at Lakeland was also much enjoyed. The Institute is looking forward to our Group Bursary Flower demonstration and workshop with Michael Bowyer. We have great expectations.
Our December meeting will be "Self entertainment" with a bring a plate of food supper.
We welcome new members, see our website on www.this-is-amesbury.co.uk or our programme in the Library.

We welcome other groups who come to visit Salisbury, Stonehenge, Woodhenge, Wilton and surrounding areas. Wholesome WI teas. Details to suit you. For the availability of our lovely hall and details contact Mrs A Rasey Telephone 01980 597373 or any officer.
Amesbury Evening WI was formed in November 1971 (with the help of the then Amesbury Afternoon WI) to cater for the number of working women unable to attend afternoon meetings.
We now have members of all ages. Our membership at this years AGM was over 40.
We are a part of the Wiltshire Federation of Womens Institutes and a member of the Stonehenge Group.
We are a very active W.I. with the following groups activities:
Produce, Skittles, Whist, Rambling and Gardening.
It is my pleasure to present the 2007 Annual Report for Amesbury Evening W.I.
Throughout the year we have continued to follow the ideals of the Women’s Institute, which are to educate women to enable them to provide an effective role in the community, to expand their horizons, and to develop and pass on skills.
The speakers at our monthly meetings have covered a number of different subjects. The year began with an informative talk about the history and upkeep of the “Fovant Badges”. This local theme was continued in later months when we learnt about Salisbury Museum, and heard about the logistical problems encountered by Southern Electric during and after the “Great Storm of 1987”.
From wet and windy conditions in England we were transported to the sizzling Caribbean when Kathy Knight described her fund raising bike ride in aid of Denman College called “Cycle Cuba”. Then we were plunged into the frozen extremes of Antarctica and the arctic regions of Canada in a fascinating talk aptly named “Cold Places”.
We just could not believe our eyes when shown slides of different “Optical Illusions”, but we all agreed that the “Photographic Competition” held at our birthday meeting, had produced some stunning images taken at home and abroad using both traditional and digital cameras.
The “Adventures of a Pig Farmer” provided us with an evening of non-stop laughter, whilst “Wills and Power of Attorney” gave us plenty to think about for the future.
Following a talk last year by a representative of “Wiltshire Search and Rescue”, one of our members decided to join the organisation. At last years’ Annual Meeting, Diane gave us an absorbing account of her training and involvement.
Throughout the year we have arranged several different events, some for our own information and enjoyment and others as fund raising ventures. We spent a most enjoyable morning learning how to make the most of ourselves by choosing the correct colours and clothing styles, and then followed this with an exercise session which showed us how to improve our posture and dexterity. Following on from this theme we organised a fashion show with the “Edinburgh Woollen Mill” at Wilton, using our own “home grown” models.
In the summer months we visited a local farm, and also enjoyed a local walk around the river Avon followed by a ploughman’s supper. Our annual jumble sale was again a great success, and we supported the Amesbury Carnival by having two stalls at their fete. We also managed to clean up three areas of Amesbury when a group carried out a litter pick-up.
We have supported the Stonehenge Group at their two meetings. In May everyone thoroughly enjoyed a superb talk about training given at the Royal School of Needlework, and we were very pleased when Jenny won the competition with a beautiful piece of embroidery. At the November meeting we helped to provide entertainment for a social afternoon, and a good time was had by all.
About ten members attended the Federations’ Annual General meeting in the City Hall, Salisbury, and a team of six members served about 800 cups of tea and coffee during the intervals. We have also supported many WFWI events by attending Irresistible Indian Cookery, a Mah Jong afternoon, the Resolution Selection meeting, Flash Bang Wallop and Living with seven Women. Members had hoped to attend two other events but unfortunately they had to be cancelled. However we have taken up invitations to join Downton WI at their skittles evening and fashion show.
In June we provided teas for two visiting groups and later in the year two members had two minutes of fame when they took part in an episode of the television programme “the Best of British Food” when it was filmed at Stonehenge.
Feeling concern for the victims of the storms in July, we made contact with Newtown W.I. in Tewkesbury to offer help to those who had been flooded. After an appeal to members and friends, we took a van full of household goods, bedding and toys to Tewkesbury where they were distributed. Strong friendships were forged that day, we have been in contact ever since. In October a group from Tewkesbury visited Salisbury and joined us in the afternoon for tea, we are hoping to go there in the summer.
Our groups have been busy. Both produce groups have cooked and tasted some delicious recipes and also arranged a trip to Waitrose for a cookery demonstration. The gardening group have travelled the countryside to view beautiful gardens and estates. The skittles tam managed to get through to the quarter finals of the Wiltshire Federation competition – but sadly that is where the success ended. However, the whist group found that cards fell just as they wanted and were extremely pleased to achieve joint second place in the federation finals. Though the ramblers have reduced on numbers, they have enjoyed some lovely walks, helped by the Stonehenge Stomp and Amesbury Amble and raised money for the Macmillan Cancer Appeal by doing a sponsored walk.
This has been another busy and successful year for Amesbury evening W.I. and on behalf of the committee, I would like to thank all those who helped to organise the events I have mentioned and everyone who supported them.
