Frequented the Friar Tuck with friends on many an occasion during this time. I now live in Cheshire but my parents left the army life and retired to Salisbury, so I still pass through Amesbury now and then on my visits with them. Anyone out there remember the Stonhenge Pub during this time and the Friday night dance in the room out the back? Anyone reading this site and remembers the likes of me, Dave Binder and Johnny Westen during this 60's period, then email me as the three of us are still in touch. |

I used to live in Amesbury in the early 50s, when it was still possible for children to play in safety beside the Avon and on a summer evening you could walk to Stonehenge, sit under the stones and watch the rabbits play. I used to go to school at a place run by Mrs Cowmeadow and her daughter and then, later, catch the school bus to Salisbury. Your site is a beautiful tribute to a very special place. Thank you |

I was browsing through some sites looking for something when I came across this site. I've heard of Stone Henge of course but have never been there. I Knew it was either, in or near Salisbury Plains, but didn't know that Amesbury was also not to far away. The funny thing is, I live in Amesbury MA and there is a Salisbury MA about three miles or so away from us. I wanted you to know how it's a small world huh? I'm from England originally, I've known about Stone henge and I knew that Massachusetts is one of the NEW England states, obviously named for the same town names etc etc. However I wasn't aware there was an Amesbury in England LOL. That's so awesome, thankyou for letting view your site. |

The car park just off the A303 is handy for a much needed break. And it is a free car park which is unusual these days. Long may your policy continue. We find it a delightful town, and always pop in for a cuppa and eats at that very nice bakery come tea shop in the High Street. But..........despite the fact that a sign attached to the outside wall of the car park toilets states that the toilets are cleaned twice daily, they are in fact the smelliest fly ridden toilets it is our misfortune to have to visit. Could I suggest that whoever is responsible for the upkeep of the toilets, (not the cleaners), but him or her in charge, should pay the a visit, especialy on a hot summer day. Said toilets could be the first port of call for any visitor to the town via that car park. And it is a pity the impression given could colour peoples memories of a very nice town. There is a phone number given for comments such as I have just made. But I never remember to jot it down. Hence this message. |

It was such a wonderful place to stay, I've never forgotten it, but I cannot recall the name of it. If anyone could help me out with the name of this hotel I would really appreciate it. As you can see my name is Ames but the family also used Eames at various periods. I am looking for the connection between the two towns, and can easily (but possibly incorrectly) assume that some of your residents might have settled there. I am also trying to find any connection between my family name (Ames/Eames) and the name of your town. The earliest references I can find to our name are around 1505-1525. There was a branch of the family in Bruton, Somerset and my branch who lived in Dorset. There was also an Ames in York about that time. There is no link to your historical society nor the Amesbury Society, so could you pass this on to see if someone can shed any light on these questions? I had a good time in Amesbury, walking the streets and conversing with friendly townspeople. I plan to come again. Thanks so much. |

Please would you put in a link from your site to mine, for the convenience of those seeking access to my services? I'd be very grateful. We were discussing this at the Amesbury Town Band concert, bonfire and firework display last night, with the Mayor, John Lodge and others. Best wishes from Rob Key. |

My parents visited about a dozen or so years ago and the home we lived in (Ratfyn Barrow House) had been converted to a B&B. I've been desperately scouring the internet looking to see if it was still operating but I have had no luck. My wife and I are planning a trip in May and if someone could reply and advise if the house still exists (is it still a B&B?)and if there were any contact information -phone or e-mail. Thank you. I especially enjoyed perusing your Council meeting minutes. It was interesting to read your Councilors dealing with many of the same issues we face here in Amesbury, USA (cell towers, speeding cars, Mr.Wiggleworth's issue of illegal auto sales,...) Notably, I found the Amesbury Society page very well done and only wish we could harness the resources to duplicate the service here. For anyone whose interested in our affairs here, please visits www.amesburyissues.org as well as the Town's web-site (see link). As a final thought, I've booked a trip to the UK for mid-march to visit some friends and relatives and was considering a visit to our ancestral town. If at all possible, I would be very keen on hooking up with some of the locals to tour the Town and possibly meet anyone interested in sharing experiences in Town Planning issues. Look forward to your response. Regards, Nicholas J. Cracknell, AICP Town Planner Amesbury, Ma. USA |

I came away from your town with my very own ghost story and eternally smitten after a 10 minute conversation with a sweet young lady outside of the library. And I have to believe that somewhere along the line, some forebear of mine resided there centuries ago. Amesbury, I love ya! |

It is a special link for my family, since my 8X great grandfather, Henry Mist, and many descendants lived and worked in the fields of Amesbury in the 1600-1800's. Henry was a yeoman farmer who died there in 1640. In 1751 my 5X great grandfather, John Mist, left Amesbury for Abbotts Ann, Hampshire where he married Mary Cole. The splendid book of Flitcroft maps of 1726, at the WRO, list my Mist ancestors on a number of the furlongs in the common fields. We treasure the excellent book, "Amesbury:History and Description of a South Wiltshire Town", by John Chandler and Peter Goodhugh. We have fond memories of attending the Sunday service in the historic parish church of St. Mary and St. Melor in may, 2000. Your excellent website allows us to feel connected to this lovely, historic town. Judy Fleming ( nee Mist) ahmic@interlog.com Thornhill Ontario, Canada |
